“Overwhelmed” Music Video

The Challenge

A music video for the song Overwhelmed by Royal & the Serpent was created. The video focused on the many anxious feelings shared by different individuals. This was presented though one “main” character, and branched off to others over time. Plenty of B-roll footage was used and edited in order to turn the monotonous into the overwhelming. The music video radiated an experimental/montage style with a strong focus on editing short clips in order to keep the viewer engaged and connected with both the music and the visuals.

Planning

PART 01
Context of overwhelming news is introduced. Newscaster is presented. Newscaster reveals herself as main character.
PART 02
Main character sings the lyrics of the song. Main character’s anxieties are revealed. B-roll of stressful scenes are shown.
PART 03
B-roll of stressful scenes become more frantic. Main character’s lip sync branches off to other subjects. After climax of overwhelming news, video fades and ends.

Mood Board

My key words and visuals for the music video included:

  • Gloomy
  • Mix of dark and light
  • Complimentary neon colours,
  • Combination of organic and abstract,
  • “Glitchy” or choppy

After developing the storyboard, I cast the footage of my actors by giving them a prompt and allowing them to record themselves. My own footage followed, along with the final cut of the music video.
