The Challenge
This project called for the conception of a complete redesign of the griff: MacEwan University’s student magazine. In this assignment, students were given the responsibility to select the content, establish a direction in terms of style and point of view, and design the main components to reflect our new individual direction.
The Process
In order to select real content to work with, I researched the griff’s existing archive to envision a special edition that concentrated on a specific topic. After gathering similar articles that resonated with me, I redesigned the griff with the intention of creating an edition that celebrates taking care of the environment. I started by developing a mood board to gather inspiration.
Paper textures were incorporated to encourage the concept of recycling everyday items and making the most use of them.
This sample version of the griff focuses on the importance of sustainability. Each article, recipe, and listing emphasizes looking good, feeling great, and living “green.”
The system is bold and textured, with an emphasis on the integration of type and imagery. Two typefaces, Adobe Song and Muli, complement each other throughout the magazine. Muli’s extensive family of striking sans-serif weights combines with the delicate serif of Adobe Song to create large, expressive titles and sophisticated articles.
The incorporation of paper textures adds dynamism and interest to the magazine, encouraging the concept of recycling and reusing supplies and belongings.
The Results
This version of the griff is well-established and assertive; its professional attitude with pops of colour, line, and texture draws relevance to the student body. MacEwan students are all professionals, yet we have our own unique skill sets and interests. The Sustainability Edition of the griff presents eye-catching typography and design principles while remaining humble and polished, much like the students of MacEwan University.
