Wreck This Typeface: Postcard Design

The Challenge

In this school project, I was instructed to play, experiment, add, take out, transform, augment, and morph two assigned letters (C and E) to provide a new take on the iconic typeface, DIN. Among the class, the typeface was pushed to its limits through photo manipulation to create a class poster of DIN’s alphabet.

Postcards (shown below) were also printed, traded, and handed out to family, friends, and prospective clients.

The Process

The concept for the “wrecked” letter “C” lends itself to representing a word that starts with the letter C. The original idea of using food was brainstormed, and cherries are successful in having enough visual interest in regards to the masked stems leading away from the letter.

The concept for the “wrecked” letter “E” stems from the idea of moving in the opposite direction from DIN’s modern, industrial appearance. The imagery of a torn, aged, coffee-stained letter is applied and blown out. The imagery was most successful on a stark, black background.
